Zippo Manufacturing was founded in 1932 and produced its first lighter in 1933 when founder George G. Blaisdell became interested in an Austrian lighter of similar design. George G. Blaisdell was also impressed by the pronunciation of the word "zipper", so the lighters were given the more modern shortened name "zippo".
